About Rowan

Rowan Hodge has been the CEO of the Andersens franchise network since January 2019. He is the current President of the Australian Retailers Association and is a founding member of the Major Retailers Alliance. In addition to 25 years in senior leadership roles in the franchising industry spread across 12 countries. Rowan has two degrees in Accounting and Law from the Queensland University of Technology.

Immediately prior to his present role, Rowan was the CEO of the Battery World franchise network, Rowan oversaw a period of rapid expansion, which included Australia’s largest battery recycling program. This program saw Rowan as an active member of the Battery Working Group, engaging with industry stakeholders from all along the supply chain, together with state and federal government departments on a regular basis during the formulation of a voluntary Industry Code of Conduct. On the back of these initiatives and more, Battery World was awarded the EFTPOS Franchise Chain of the Year, and Innovative Franchise Chain of the Year in 2018.

Rowan has attended four international retail conventions, and countless retail and franchise expos and events in Australia in recent years to stay at the forefront of retail thought leadership and innovation. This has given him a firm grasp of trends not only in retail, but also in service delivery, evolving customer trends, supply chains and the technologies to enable effective teams.

As a leader, Rowan believes in the Rockefeller Habits: rhythm, measurement and alignment. He runs his organisation on a strict drumbeat of reporting and goal setting, with immovable Monday team meetings during which every member of his team shares their progress in their individual quarterly KPIs with the whole team. Among their quarterly KPIs, every member of Rowan’s team has one developmental goal and one cross training goal to make them a stronger and more engaged pack. Far from constraining his team, this heavy emphasis on meetings, goals and training have enlivened the culture of the workplace, giving a shares sense of mission and a steady frequent measure of praise, recognition and encouragement. All weekly meetings begin with a win and end with a positive word from each participant to send them away fit to fight.

Rowan maintains the same attitude to data, relationships and frequency in his network communications also, with a weekly newsletter, a monthly dashboard, and regularly scheduled calls and visits to every single store. Leading a disparate group of local business owners is not easy, yet the Franchise Relationships Institute ranked Andersens “elite” in their last franchisee sentiment survey.
